Biking
Adventure #1: Montana Mountain and Mountain Hero
This mountain bike trail is world class and is rated as an epic trail. Our adventure is a slight twist on this otherwise incredible trail.
- Trail Difficulty: Medium
- Duration: 6 hours
- Camping: Plenty of nice spots in the alpine
- Highlights: Incredibly scenic views of Carcross, Bove island, and Windy Arm. There is also several old historic mine sites to visit along the way
Getting There
The bike ride starts on Montana mountain in Carcross. You can find the access road by taking the third right turn after the Nairs bridge. This road will take you to the base of many mountain bike trails. There is a good trail map at the bottom which we recommend you check out. This parking lot is the start of the trail. It will save you some time to drop-off a car at the end of the trail, which is a gravel parking lot one left turn passed the Conrad campground, on the way to Skagway.
First Part of the Trail
Mountain hero follows an old mining road up all the way to the top of the mountain. It is not a smooth single-track road so be prepared for biking up essentially a gravel road until you get to the top. Once you get to the top, congratulations! Take a breath and enjoy some of the scenic vistas.
Camping
Here is the twist! Most people that do Mountain hero do not camp, they just continue and ride down the trail. In our opinion you do so much work to get to the alpine might as well make use of your effort and find a nice comfy spot to camp. I have camped on a lot of mountains, but Montana takes the cake for most gorgeous scenery. The mountain range goes for miles, so there is plenty to explore on foot, after you stash your bike. There is plenty of access to water and sheltered spots up here. Just be mindful of mountain goats and sheep, always be respectful and avoid camping in the spring when animals are calving.
Getting Down
The bike down is extremely fun. It is an intuitive trail down. You should have no problem finding it. Be mindful that many people hike up this trail so be careful of hikers.
